Overview

Drivers must be medically fit to drive to DVLA Group 1 standard. 

The ADP requires: 

  •   An initial or renewal medical declaration
  •   Medical assessments as relating to age limits
  •   Health conditions as declared by the driver
  •   Reviews following driving accidents or incidents at work

Preparation

You need to bring the following documents to the examination:

(Do not sign or date) Complete before you attend (declare any chronic complaints e. g. nose bleeds, asthma, allergies, migraine, arthritis and medications)

e. g.  Passport or Driving Licence.

Applicants can bring a brief patient summary from their GP surgery including reports for any condition e. g. “Blackouts”, “Sleep Apnoea” or “Diabetes”  – even if you are well.

(This must disclose any chronic complaints e. g. nose bleeds, asthma, allergies, migraine, arthritis and medications)

Please bring your Spectacles even if you use contact lenses.

Important note

You must disclose any medical condition or prescribed medication as it may affect your ability to drive safely. 

White Coat Hypertension

If you might have raised blood pressure at medicals then please abstain from alcohol, caffeine, fizzy and herbal drinks for 2 weeks prior to your appointment. Do Home Blood Pressure Monitoring for 2 week’s with twice-a-day readings. Your machine should be checked annually.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

If your BMI is over 35, you will require further investigations. Any certificates may be time limited.

How long is the examination?

The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.

When will I get my certificate?

Provided all is satisfactory, Medical certificates will be provided after completion of medical assessment.

Decrease in medical fitness

If you become unwell you must seek advice as soon as possible. Meanwhile you must NOT exercise any privileges of the licence.
